The Kikomachine Komiks when I first read it was in circulation of the
Filipino newspaper The Inquirer. It was such a hilarious comic strip
that sometimes hits people with political humor and moral situation of
the country as well. I've learned many things while reading the strip,
but most of the time I'm laughing my butt out.
The first time a compilation was released(I think it was 2005) I grabbed
a copy and ran to our house to read and laugh. Man it was a good comic
strip all right, and a compilation means more laughs!
The comic strip deals with the common college life here in the
Philippines. It's not all parties and binge drinking (sorry US fellows),
it's a battle of supremacy, but not really. The setting of the comics,
is well UP, or so I think. The artist of the comic strip, Mr. Manix
Abrera, ws from that school, and the first strips came from the school
paper of that school. UP is an abbreviation of University of the
Philippines, one and the most renowned state University in the
Philippines. And if you're one of those who views the Philippines as a
third-world country (don't be shy, most of us think so too, what a sad
reality right?), you may have an idea of what goes around here.
Well, with that idea, mix with humor, you really get a good touch of
what really happens there, and with a laugh most of the time. Sometimes
you can also spot political satire as well, but then most of the time
it's just pointless, nonsense humor that in the slightest, still hits
the current issues. That's what to love with the comics: Being aware
while laughing at the same time. To Mr Manix, kudos to you.
There are already four copies of the compilation in bookstores here in
the Philippines. If you're a Pinoy, I recommend this one.
